Running a small but successful business used to feel like sailing a ship-you needed skill, focus, and a good weather eye. These days, it feels more like steering a bumper car while blindfolded… during a thunderstorm.
After nearly 50 years in business, we’ve been at this since before mobile phones, and the internet, and oat milk lattes-we’ve weathered more storms than we can count. We've built a brand with backbone, offered products and services that genuinely exceed expectations, and earned the kind of customer loyalty that many dream about. So you’d think, at this point, we’d be cruising. But instead, we’re navigating a very different kind of challenge-one that’s invisible, unpredictable, and, frankly, a little absurd.
This new challenge? Culture. But not the kind shaped by tradition or hard-earned trust. We're talking about the algorithm-fuelled culture born from social media platforms where trends expire fast and yesterday’s strategy is today’s cautionary tale. You try to read the signals, only to find that they've changed overnight - like trying to nail jelly to a wall, only to discover the wall is now digital, and the jelly has gone viral.
Even when you turn to the reliable old friends-Google Analytics, customer feedback, real metrics - you’re left scratching your head, wondering why solid performance and glowing reviews no longer guarantee consistent results. It’s as if the business world suddenly developed a case of short-term memory loss.
I’ve always liked the line: "If you see the gravy train coming, you're too late." These days, it feels more like the gravy train came and went silently, puffing gently through town while we were busy doing what we do best - only to hit the afterburners once it passed, leaving behind a cloud of confusion and the haunting question: “Wait… what just happened?”
We’re not giving up, of course. That’s not in our DNA. But we are acknowledging that today’s business environment demands more than just quality, experience, and a good reputation. It demands agility, resilience, and a dash of madness to keep up with a marketplace.
So if you’re also feeling like you're doing everything right and still being outpaced by trends you didn’t even know existed - welcome to the club. We’ve got history, high standards… and now, a blog.
